Using skills in Harriet Desktop
Skills are the capabilities your organization has assigned to you: how to write a customer email, how to reconcile a spreadsheet, how to triage a support ticket. In Harriet Desktop they arrive on their own and apply when your request matches — this page shows where to see them and what to do when one is missing.
How assigned skills appear
You never install your assigned skills by hand. Skills from your profile and any direct assignments are deployed into the app when you sign in, and the app picks up changes on its regular sync while it is open. Assign a new skill in the console and an open app has it within minutes.
Skills activate by relevance: describe the job in a session, and the AI applies the matching skill. An accountant who asks for last month's expense summary gets the finance team's reporting skill without naming it; a sales rep asking for a call prep brief gets the sales version. Some skills also install slash commands — /onboard, for example, walks you through connecting integrations your organization has provisioned but you haven't authorized yet.
The Skills tab
Open Skills in the app to see what you have. From there you can:
- Search and filter. The search covers installed skills and skills shared by your organization; an Installed filter narrows to what is already on this workspace.
- Install skills from your organization. Skills your organization shares appear in a From your organization section with an Install action.
- Import a local skill. Import local skill copies an existing skill folder into the current workspace — useful when a colleague hands you a skill folder to try before it is rolled out properly.
When a skill is missing
If a skill you expect doesn't show up, work through it in this order:
- Give sync a moment. Changes reach an open app within about five minutes. Check My AI to confirm what is actually assigned to you.
- Follow the troubleshooting guide. Skill not appearing covers the common causes, from assignment gaps to a device that stopped syncing.
- Request it. If the skill was never assigned to you, file a skill request — it goes to the people who manage assignments.
Building your own
When no skill exists for a job your team does every week, you don't have to wait for IT. Skilify turns a description of the workflow into a draft skill, and the review workflow gets it approved and assigned like any other. Operations teams often start here: the checklist that lives in one person's head becomes a skill everyone's app carries.
