Skill not appearing

A skill you expect is not showing up in the desktop app. Work through these checks in order — they run from "the skill never shipped" to "the device just hasn't caught up yet".

Check in this order

  1. Is the skill approved? Harriet only provisions skills that are active and approved through the review workflow. A skill that is still submitted, in draft, or rejected does not reach any device, even when it already sits in a profile. On the profile detail screen, a skill that is not yet live carries an "Awaiting approval" chip next to its name. Admins clear this in the review queue.
  2. Is it assigned to you? Skills reach people through a profile assigned to them or to one of their teams, or through a direct skill assignment. Direct skill assignments are per-person only; teams receive capabilities only through profiles. An admin can confirm this on your person record: open People, pick the person, and read the Access tab — Effective access merges the default profile, direct assignments, and everything inherited from teams. See Assigning skills.
  3. Is the skill still in the profile? If someone recently edited the profile, the skill may have been removed from its skill list, or the profile may have been unassigned from your team. The profile detail screen shows both the ordered skill list and the "Assigned to" summary.
  4. Did you opt out? In My AI, the Tools per capability card has a checkbox next to each skill that stops it being provisioned to your machines. Your assignments still exist; the opt-out only affects your devices. Re-check the box and select Save changes. See Opting out.
  5. Has your device synced since the change? Devices check in every five minutes, so a skill approved or assigned a moment ago takes one sync cycle to land. Check Last check-in in the Your devices table, and confirm the Config column shows OK rather than "No report yet" or Failed. If the device is not checking in at all, follow Device not syncing.
  6. Restart the desktop app. The configuration may already be on disk while the app is still showing its previous state. Quit and reopen the desktop app after the sync completes.

If you were never assigned the skill

When the checks above show the skill simply is not assigned to you, you do not need an admin to start the conversation. Open My AI and request the skill: a manager approves or denies the request, and approval creates the direct assignment for you. Skills configured for auto-approval grant access immediately.

Admin view: confirm what the device will get

Admins can settle "should this device have the skill?" definitively from the console:

  1. Open Devices and pick the device. The provisioning preview lists Skill packages and MCP servers the device will receive on its next sync.
  2. Check Pending connections. A connector-backed skill that needs the person's own account sign-in shows here with a connect link — the skill is provisioned, but its tools fail until the person connects. See Connection errors.
  3. Check the Deployment card. "Configuration applied" means the device has the current configuration; "Waiting for this device to apply the latest configuration from Harriet…" means the change has not landed yet.
💡

If the skill appears in the preview but not on the machine, the problem is sync, not assignment — go to Device not syncing.
