What can Harriet do with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files?

Upload Office formats to the Knowledge Base, use them in automations where supported, and use template-based document generation—not full desktop editing in the assistant.

Harriet supports Microsoft Office–style files in practical ways, but it is not a replacement for the desktop Office apps.

Knowledge Base

  • You can upload common Office formats (for example Word, PowerPoint) as knowledge documents so Harriet can search and cite them like PDFs or web pages.
  • Keep files well structured (headings, tables labelled clearly) for better answers.

Document generation (where enabled)

  • Some skills or workflows generate documents from templates (for example offer letters) and may output Word or PDF depending on configuration.
  • This is template-driven: you maintain approved templates and variables; Harriet fills them under governance you set.

What Harriet is not doing

  • Free-form Excel modelling or full slide design as an interactive Office substitute.
  • Silent editing of arbitrary files on disk without going through supported tools and permissions.

Example

HR uploads a .docx policy to the Knowledge Base; employees ask questions and Harriet quotes the right section. Separately, an onboarding workflow generates a personalised welcome PDF from an approved template.

Guardrails

  • Sensitive spreadsheets with personal data should use group restrictions like any other knowledge document.
  • For generated documents, keep legal-approved templates and record which workflow version produced each file.
